FAQs

Q: What happens during a free consult appointment?

A: I will ask you to share a little bit about what is bringing you to therapy and encourage you to ask me any questions about therapy and or working with me. During the consult appointment, I share more about my therapeutic approach.

Q: Your website says you don’t take insurance, but will provide a superbill. What does that mean?

A: Some insurance plans include out of network (OON) benefits. A superbill is an itemized receipt that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. I can not give you any information about what your insurance will or won’t cover and encourage you to call your insurance directly to get that information.

Q: How often and for how long will we meet?

A: I offer 60-minute and 90-minute appointments for both individuals and couples. I ask that new clients meet weekly to get the most out of therapy for the first six weeks. As we meet, I will check-in and ask how the frequency of therapy is working for you, and we can adjust the frequency and duration as we go.

Q: Your office is in Virginia but I live in Oregon, can you still working with me?

A: Yes! I am licensed in Oregon, Washington, and Virginia and can provide virtual therapy to anyone in those three states.

Q: How does therapy work? Do I talk, and you just listen?

A: Every therapist is different. My style is very conversational. I ask a lot of questions so that I can understand you but also so that you can know yourself better. Sometimes I share different coping skills or reflect on some of the patterns I notice coming up in your thoughts and your life, and we explore these. Most clients tell me that there is a flow to our appointments and very little awkward silences.

Q: Am I allowed to ask you questions about you, or is that crossing a boundary?

A: I am a firm believer that therapy works best when there is a good fit, and clients feel comfortable with their therapist. I welcome all clients to ask me questions that they have. I share very little during appointments because I feel that the therapy time belongs to the client. If there is a question that I don’t feel comfortable answering, I will gladly set that boundary with you and discuss it. When clients ask questions, they are trying to gauge how safe they are in the therapy room.
